SOWK 531 - Trauma Theory
Will immerse students in the theoretical knowledge of trauma types, dynamics, and the neuro-biopsychosocial consequences that individuals who are survivors of maltreatment, interpersonal abuse, manmade/natural disasters, and other types of chronic stress and trauma across the lifespan experience. Will use case examples supplemented with salient readings regarding the epigenetics and neuroscience of trauma, evidence-based assessment practices, to discuss these theories. Particular attention will be paid to effectively and ethically working with cultural status, including race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability status, and others, in understanding and working with traumatized victims and survivors within a strength’s perspective. Information will be presented that is applicable to both EBIP and OL students. (RE) Prerequisite(s): 510, 512, 513, 519, 522, 537, 538, 539 and 543 or 544. Comment(s): Advanced Standing satisfies prerequisites.
Registration Restriction(s): Graduate students only. Minimum student level – graduate. Registration Permission: Non-MSSW students may register with consent of instructor.
